Hopefully, by this decade, every business owner understands how a well-designed website impacts their business positively. What may remain unknown are the actual elements that go into creating a positive user experience and how that affects the bottom line. Let’s take a look at some of those elements and why they’re important.

Your website is generally the very first opportunity to set the tone for your brand and showcase the unique offerings that sets you apart from the competition. So what exactly goes into a quality designed website?

Information Hierarchy

Visual hierarchy guides and directs the user through important features of graphic design. Similarly, the flow of information is largely dictated by information hierarchy through the use of solid navigation.

For example, let’s consider conversion. Conversion can be tracked on a website in various ways. Beyond the obvious conversion of sale, other metrics like a user signing up for a newsletter or clicking on a call-to-action may also be important KPIs that count toward conversion goals. Ideally, we want to drive users to a desired conversion point within one or two clicks. The best way to do this is by making it easy for them to find exactly what they’re looking for or rather, guiding them to what you WANT them to see.

One trend we’re seeing in 2020 is the mega menu being replaced by ultra-minimalist navigation. With omnichannel access to sites through devices like smartwatches, designers are beginning to distill the navigation down to a very basic icon-based navigation.

Engaging Visuals

Visuals are a quick and easy way to add value to your website, but choose wisely. In using purposeful graphics, infographics and video, less is more. From a practical standpoint,

your users are 10x more likely to interact with video than with a block of text. For times sake, most users will scan the site quickly to seek out informative imagery and headlines instead of reading through each page’s copy. The point is to get to the point as fast as possible by employing impactful visual aids without overloading your site with superfluous text.

Better CTA

Remember a time when you were at a store and spent hours sifting through bins of disorganized, random items to find the one thing you came for? And, only when you didn’t find it, you came back the next day and did the same thing all over again? Not likely. Listen, bargain hunting is one thing, but if you need information about a business or product online quickly, the expectation is that it should be one Google search and only a few clicks away.

By using better calls-to-action, you’re enabling the customer to get the information they’re after, much faster: a win-win. Simple design techniques such as well-placed, brightly colored buttons are a quick way to improve your click-throughs and optimize user experience.

Your website’s design plays a pivotal role in your success. By providing an optimal online experience with these best practices, you’ll be surprised how much they’ll impact your results.
